The European Convention on Human rights 60 Years on: What about Youth rights?
The 4th November marked the 60th anniversary of the signing of the European Convention on Human Rights in 1950. The Convention, which then came into force on 3rd September 1953, guarantees a range of political rights and freedoms of the individual against interference by the state. To this end, the Council of Europe has been widely congratulated in its work as the engine for the creation of a Europe based on the respect of human rights, peace and tolerance.

The Council of Europe's progressive attitude towards new issues in human rights, as well as its participatory approach to policy making, has ensured constant achievement has been attained in the past 60 years in furthering human rights in Europe. According to a recent European Youth Forum Report on Youth Rights however, young people are currently experiencing difficulties in accessing their rights. Furthermore, young people are struggling to find affordable and accessible housing, access to health care and social services as well as access to decent and stable employment. Young people in Europe therefore, are now looking towards to the recognition of Youth Rights within the legal frameworks of the Council of Europe.

The European Youth Forum is continuing its advocacy work for a stronger rights-approach youth policy through the demand for a Convention for the rights of young people in Europe, as the highest legally binding tool for enforcing youth rights in Europe. The European Youth Forum believes that the Council of Europe, being the avant-guarde of human rights in Europe, is the natural institution within which instruments to overcome this trend should be developed.
