Academic fraudulence

The representatives of student unions of Lithuania are striving to find ways to smash the corruption in higher education institutions. Though it is hard to say at what scope the corruption is spread in the system however, according to some experts the situation is getting worse. In a broad sense the corruption is called not only the bribes to the professors in order to get better evaluation during the exams, but also purchases of the thesis or papers and cribs. The latter case, according to the experts, should be better called “academic fraud”.

One way or another, but students have more and more concerns about this situation. “In this situation the losing part of academic society are all fair students and lecturers. Moreover, if those fair students know about the fraudulence of particular students and lecturers, they do not know to whom to address this issue or simply are afraid of doing so” – says Monika Bukelskyte, studying at Mykolas Romeris University and belonging to the Student Union of this University.
In students opinion (according to recently made pools), cribs are mostly common in higher education institutions. However, the other forms of academic fraudulence are widely spread as well. In addition to this, the corruption survey has revealed that third of all students at the higher education institution have given bribe to the lecturer.
Antanas Cerniauskas (student at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater) says that copying or in other words – cribs - are “popular” among boring subjects. Such subject where lecturers are demanding to learn textbooks and handbooks by heart are also among those “popular”.
